David Zwirner is pleased to present an exhibition of American artist Scott Kahn at our Hong Kong space. Once in a Blue Moon features a series of new paintings centered around various types of full moons (and their myriad connotations) as the compositional element. Also on display are a selection of landscape paintings from Kahn’s career, several of which include the moon, often appearing in the background as a harbinger of the scene below. Together, these works reflect the artist’s unique approach to the genre. This marks Kahn’s first solo exhibition in Asia and his first collaboration with the gallery since being represented in May 2024. Kahn’s enigmatic landscapes, portraits, and dreams are rooted in his everyday life and experiences, blending elements of the real and the surreal. For over fifty years, Kahn has consistently expressed himself in a figurative manner, using a unique formal language to interpret the splendor and the mundane of the surrounding world in a meticulous and poetic way. His works’ surfaces are meticulously constructed based on precise geometric shapes, colors, and spatial relationships, with the artist employing perspective and light to create an illusory sense of depth, emphasizing the resonance conveyed by recurring figures, places, and symbols. Kahn’s works embody his personal perspective while also presenting universal themes, providing viewers with a channel to engage with a range of emotions. Opening times are from November 19th to February 22nd, with specific business hours subject to daily opening conditions.
