Seagull Island, located opposite Lotus Hill in Panyu District, is a pristine island at the entrance of the Pearl River that has not been opened to the public. It still retains its original agricultural methods. The main industries on the island include rice, banana cultivation, and fish farming, presenting an idyllic countryside scene, making it an excellent weekend destination for Guangzhou residents.
Seagull Island boasts a long coastline with four administrative villages: Sha Bei, Sha Nan, Jiang Ou, and Hai Xin. The Seagull Bridge at the north end of the island connects the Lotus Hill waterway with the outside world, and a 13-kilometer-long road runs through the entire island from north to south. Renting a bicycle and cycling slowly along this road is a great way to explore the island, enjoying the sea breeze, the sound of ships’ whistles, and the seamless blend of sea and sky, which is very pleasant. It takes about an hour and a half to cycle from one end of the road to the other. Bicycle rental is very convenient, and there are rest stops along the way where you can use the restroom or take a break.
The island’s economy is primarily based on agriculture and养殖业, with rice, bananas, fruit trees, and flowers being the main crops, and ducks, rice worms, and various fish being raised in the rice paddies. In spring, there are many fresh flowers, while in autumn, the air is filled with the fragrance of fruits and melons. The fruits and vegetables here are very affordable and of high quality, so you can buy some to take home. If you are interested, you can also personally pick your favorite fruits and vegetables from the fields. Many farmhouses offer picking tours and fishing activities, which are worth trying.
The island is open all year round from 08:00 to 18:00.
