Shangguchengzi Tomb Cluster: A Significant Goguryeo Burial Site

The Shangguchengzi Tomb Cluster is located in Huanren County and is a significant stone tomb cluster from the Goguryeo period. It currently contains 30 tombs, mostly large square platform stone tombs, with a few small stone tombs without platforms. These tombs are constructed with slightly processed large stone slabs or blocks as the base platform, with stone-built chambers inside, and covered with pebbles on top of the platform and chamber.

Some tombs are distributed in a string-like pattern, possibly related to the custom of family burials. Small stone tombs are built entirely with pebbles without a base platform. The top of some tombs shows evidence of fire exposure, indicating that these might have used cremation, a practice that emerged in the early Eastern Han Dynasty and was mainly popular around the 3rd century. The Shangguchengzi Tomb Cluster is just over 10 kilometers away from the initial Goguryeo capital of Wuniushan City and only 2 kilometers away from the initial Goguryeo plain capital of Xiaguchengzi.

This tomb cluster is an important relic left by Goguryeo in its early capital. It is highly probable that the tomb owners were residents of Xiaguchengzi, making this cluster not only valuable for studying the changes in Goguryeo tomb customs but also of great significance for understanding the early history of Goguryeo.
