Chongming Dongtan National Nature Reserve for Birds is located in the core area of Chongming Dongtan at the eastern end of Chongming Island, a low-lying alluvial island. It covers an area of about 32,600 hectares, accounting for 7.8% of the total wetland area in Shanghai. The main protected targets are water birds and wetland ecosystems. Under the sedimentation of Yangtze River silt, a large area of freshwater to slightly brackish marshes, tidal channels, and intertidal mudflats have been formed.
The reserve is home to numerous fields, fish ponds, crab ponds, and reed ponds, with lush wetland vegetation and abundant benthic animals. It serves as an excellent stopover and station for migratory birds in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as an important wintering site for migratory birds, and is one of the few places in the world where wild birds gather and inhabit. The reserve is open to the public year-round from 09:00 to 15:30, with specific business hours subject to the day’s opening status.Chongming Dongtan National Nature Reserve for Birds
