Shanghai Moore Memorial Church

The Moore Memorial Church is located at the intersection of Hankou Road. It is a church with red exterior walls. Opposite it is People’s Square. If you come from West Nanjing Road, you will pass by the church entrance. However, most of the time, the door you see is closed because usually only on Sundays can you go inside and take a look. Here, you can feel the sacredness and solemnity of the church. Listening to the hymns sung by believers can also cleanse your soul. The Moore Memorial Church was completed in 1931. Its original name was Moore Memorial Church, also known as ‘Mule Church’. The church faces west. It is in the neo-Gothic style. In the middle of the church is the main hall, which can accommodate a thousand people. There is a bell tower in the southwest corner, which is very conspicuous. Adjacent to it are a four-story annex and an affiliated school. In 1936, when an American believer came to visit, he donated money to install a five-meter-high neon cross on top of the church bell tower, making this church the church in Shanghai and even in the Far East at that time. Today, a five-meter-high neon cross is installed on top of the tower. It is particularly dazzling under the night light and has become a major landscape of People’s Square. The specific business hours and opening status are subject to the opening situation on that day.
