The Shanghai Italian Center is the Italian Pavilion of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. During the World Expo, it was the second most popular venue after the China Pavilion. After the World Expo, the Italian government presented it to China and renamed it as ‘Shanghai Italian Center’, becoming a cultural exchange center between China and Italy. The design of the pavilion is inspired by the traditional Shanghai game ‘pick-up sticks’.
It is composed of 20 irregular and freely assembled functional modules, representing the 20 regions of Italy. The entire pavilion is like a miniature Italian city, full of Italian traditional urban elements such as alleys, courtyards, paths, and squares. The new Shanghai Italian Center retains the strong Italian style of the original pavilion. At the same time, with the strong advantages of local Italian resources and the support of many brands, it comprehensively shows the attainments of Italy in history, humanities, art, science and technology to the public, and also shows its unique lifestyle. Michelangelo’s David statue and the model of the Olympic Theatre in Vicenza in the Shanghai Italian Center are both masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance. Italian archaeological collections and magnificent treasures are interspersed among them. Models of bicycles, ships, aircraft, and helicopters made according to Leonardo da Vinci’s design drafts will show Italy’s achievements in modern and ecologically sustainable development.Opening hours: Open from Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 – 17:00 throughout the year; closed all day on Monday throughout the year.
