Established in 1965, the Shanghai Oil Painting and Sculpture Institute was the first professional creative and research institution in New China focusing on oil painting and sculpture, initially named the Shanghai Oil Painting and Sculpture Studio. This marked the continuation of the unique, historically-rich institution of art academies in New China. After several changes and institutional transformations, artists from the Oil Painting Department, Sculpture Department, Oil Painting and Sculpture Training Class, and Sculpture Research Institute of Shanghai Fine Arts College began to gather under the same banner, united by their shared passion for art.
From their initial steps to their persistent progress, three generations of artists have poured their hearts, sweat, wisdom, and creativity into their work, earning widespread recognition and acclaim. These artists, known both domestically and internationally, and holding a significant place in the history of modern Chinese art, include Wu Dayu, Zhang Chongren, Zhou Bichu, Yu Yunjie, and others; a group of diligent, exploratory, and influential young and middle-aged oil painters and sculptors have become the backbone of the institute; in recent years, a new generation of innovative and daring young artists has emerged, showcasing diverse styles and expertise. The hard work and dedication of three generations of artists have led to their achievements. Over the past four decades, the Shanghai Oil Painting and Sculpture Institute has created many well-known excellent works and a series of research results. Some of these works have won awards nationally and in Shanghai; some have been exhibited abroad and won international awards; some have been collected by national art galleries and museums, and others by overseas collectors and museums. Works such as ‘The Collapse of the Chiang Dynasty’, ‘Discussing Major Issues’, ‘Yuhuatai Group Sculpture’, and ‘May 30th Monument’ have become well-known and are considered timeless masterpieces in the history of Chinese art. In recent years, the institute’s artists,秉承 the spirit of hard work and continuous progress of their predecessors, have seized opportunities and kept pace with the times. In the fiercely competitive social environment, they strive to explore and find their own artistic forms and languages, creating many works of art that promote the main melody and praise the new era. These artworks, imbued with the artists’ passion for life and artistic wisdom, have won awards in national and Shanghai art exhibitions. The institute is open all year round from Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00-17:00; closed all day on Mondays; open on New Year’s Eve and Chinese New Year, 10:00-17:00. The specific business status is subject to the daily opening situation.Shanghai Oil Painting and Sculpture Institute
