On November 2, 2024, ‘Simplicity and Transformation – Shen Jingdong’s Parallel World’ will be exhibited at the Bund 18 Jiushi Art Space. The exhibition is divided into four sections based on the creation time, showcasing over 80 works by Shen Jingdong from 2003 to the present. These include the ‘Hero Series’, ‘Bandaging Series’, ‘Little Prince Series’, ‘International Joke Series’, ‘Child Series’, ‘Party Series’, and ‘Surname Series’, covering various types of artworks such as oil paintings, sculptures, installations, and images. The artist Shen Jingdong uses the infinite space and time as a backdrop, and with a unique perspective and mindset, transforms his turbulent experiences and the impermanence of the world into a humorous tone and simplified style, reflecting in his works. The theme of the exhibition, ‘Simplicity and Transformation’, highlights the distinct characteristics of Shen Jingdong’s artistic language. Highly simplified and self-contained, the shapes are naive and lovely, the colors are bright and cheerful, and the texture is as hard and smooth as ceramic, metal, or plastic. ‘Transformation’ refers to the process of resolving and digesting. Amidst a humorous, witty, mocking, and ironic tone, all matters, emotions, and events are resolved into a comedic fairy tale. As he says: ‘In fairy tales, even the villains are lovable.’ The exhibition is open from November 2 to January 5, with specific business hours subject to the daily opening status.
