Xie Molin was born in Wenzhou and grew up in an environment selling steel machinery. This intimate relationship with materials became an important starting point for Xie Molin’s artistic creation and laid the groundwork for his future endeavors. Machines are both an extension of the artist’s body and carry inevitable limitations. It is precisely these limitations that enhance the depth of artistic creation, propelling the artist to continuously explore new possibilities, thereby subtly indicating the role of humans in the technological era. This exhibition brings together Xie Molin’s works from the past decade, fully presenting his trajectory of artistic exploration. From the early reliance on machinery to the exploration of the materiality of pigments, and to recent attention to the relationship between light, shadow, and space, Xie Molin’s creations continue to enrich, forming a rich and organic interactive relationship between people, machines, and works. A specially filmed artist’s self-narrative is also presented on-site as an annotation to gain a deeper understanding of Xie Molin’s creative process. He integrates a three-layer structure painting technique, emphasizing a re-examination of the fundamental elements of painting. These works not only highlight the inherent charm of light and shadow in the material but also profoundly point to the energy of life. About the artist: Born in 1979 in Wenzhou, China, Xie Molin graduated from the Mural Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and the Painting Department of the Edinburgh College of Art in the UK. He currently lives and works in Beijing. Starting with the customization and creation of his first painting machine, Xie Molin gradually formed a unique path in painting. His embrace of ‘machines’ stems from the need for a more precise expression of painting form, as well as a conceptual significance. ‘Machines’ can be used by artists not only to replace traditional tools for painting but also to make new explorations in this creative form, corresponding to the multiple imaginations of the possibilities brought by technology in contemporary China. Xie Molin’s works have been exhibited and collected by various art museums and institutions. The exhibition is open from November 6th to December 8th, with specific business hours subject to the day’s opening status.
