The Shanghai Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine is composed of the Medical History Museum of the Chinese Medical Association, the Chinese Medicinal Specimen Exhibition Hall, the University History Exhibition Hall, the Herbal Garden, and the Apricot Forest Garden. The three-story single building adopts a semi-circular and semi-square design, symbolizing ‘Heaven is round and Earth is square’.
A bronze acupuncture man, made during the Qianlong era (1744), stands at 46cm in height, 22.8cm in width, and 16cm in depth. It features meridians and acupoints cast on its surface but does not have the names of the acupoints cast. According to the inscriptions on the brocade box and historical records, it is one of the acupuncture bronze men created by Emperor Qianlong in the ninth year of his reign to honor the contributors to the compilation of ‘Medical Golden Mirror’. The bronze man, depicted as an elderly woman, has a naturally plump figure, a kind and vivid facial expression, and a total of 580 acupoints on its surface. It is packaged in a brocade box with annotations, making it extremely valuable.
The museum is closed all day on Mondays and open from 09:00 to 16:00 from Tuesdays to Sundays throughout the year. The specific business status is subject to the opening conditions on the day.
