The Shanghai Yangtze River Bridge is an important river-crossing passage in Chongming District, Shanghai City, located above the Yangtze River waterway and is a significant part of the Chongming Yangtze River Crossing. Construction of the bridge commenced on December 28, 2004; the bridge was completed on June 27, 2008, with the completion of the final joining; the entire bridge was completed on November 8, 2008; and it began operation on October 31, 2009. The bridge starts from Chongming Island in Shanghai, spans the Yangtze River, and ends on Changxing Island; it is 16.63 kilometers long, with the main bridge over the river being 9.97 kilometers long. The bridge has a dual six-lane highway design with a speed limit of 100 kilometers per hour. It is open all year round, 24 hours a day.
