Shangougou Scenic Area, nestled 40 kilometers northwest of Hangzhou in Yuhang, offers a serene escape with its clear waters and lush mountains. This picturesque destination is perfect for family outings, where visitors can marvel at bamboo forests and waterfalls, breathe in the fresh air, and indulge in local farmhouse cuisine. For urban dwellers seeking weekend relaxation, it’s an excellent choice.
The main attractions within the area are Tangkeng and Maotang. Tangkeng, a bamboo-shaded canyon, prides itself on its natural scenery, particularly its waterfalls. Maotang, on the other hand, is a rural leisure spot that provides opportunities to climb waterfalls. The visitor center facilitates transportation to the ticket gates of both Tangkeng and Maotang scenic spots.
Entering Tangkeng through the mountain-shaped bamboo pavilion marks the beginning of your journey into the scenic area. The ‘Heaven-Connecting Eighteen Waterfalls’, an ensemble of eighteen cascades, and the peculiar rocks along the path are must-see highlights. The entire walking tour is estimated to take around 1.5 hours.
As you follow the path, you’ll encounter unique rock formations such as ‘Immortals Playing Chess’ and ‘Lion Paying Respects’. These lead you to Cuiping Yingke, part of the Heaven-Connecting Eighteen Waterfalls. In close proximity is the Bamboo Dragon, a symbol of the entire scenic area. Its spine extends along the mountain ridge, disappearing into the distance, and it exudes a powerful aura. On clear mornings, the mist emitted from the dragon’s mouth may create a stunning rainbow.Continuing forward, Meihua Mountain Nong is a mountain stream with three-tiered waterfalls. Cliffs and plum blossoms complement each other, presenting a spectacular view within the scenic area. Several bamboo rafts are available here for visitors to pole close to the waterfalls for photos and experience the refreshing coolness. Near the Mianbi Pavilion, there is a long corridor where one can rest and almost see the entire body of the Bamboo Dragon. Climbing further up the cliff via the wooden bridge, you will find that each waterfall has its unique shape. The current accessible limit is the ninth waterfall, Peacock Display. Beyond that is an undeveloped area and should not be entered rashly.
At Maotang, near the entrance, the Duiyin Pavilion offers a view of the famous ‘Maotang Waterfall Cascades’, which are quite spectacular. Climbing waterfalls is an interesting recreational activity in Maotang. Putting on straw shoes and a safety helmet, one can ascend the waterfalls, providing a very refreshing experience. The ancient village of Maotang within the scenic area should not be missed. One can taste locally grown natural vegetables and dried bamboo shoots at the agritourism site and even stay overnight to enjoy the tranquility of the countryside. The village’s traditional wine, tofu, and rice cake workshops not only offer demonstrations of making rice cakes, brewing local wine, and grinding tofu but also allow visitors to purchase some to take home as gifts for friends and family.Maotang has some historical sites, such as the former site of the New Fourth Army’s uniform factory and ancient private schools, which can be visited together.
The entire area is open from May 1st to October 1st from 08:00 to 17:00; from October 2nd to April 30th from 08:00 to 16:30.
