Shaoxing Children’s Park is located at the west end of Huiyuan Bridge in the urban area, covering an area of 21,000 square meters. It was built by Zhao Zhuo (courtesy name Heqiao), a wealthy businessman in Huiji during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. His son, Zhao Nie (courtesy name Dingcheng, sobriquet Shengyuan), expanded it on the original site and renamed it “Shengyuan”, commonly known as “Zhao Garden”.
There are twelve scenic spots in the park, including Qingcui Tower, Huaxi Path, Tingyue Bridge, Liujiao, Lotus Pond, Songtao Pavilion, Platform, Tianxiang Residence, Zhupo, Tonglang Corridor, Xiuye Pavilion, and Meiyu. In 1978, the state allocated funds for renovation and it was built into a children’s park. In 1979, the city’s garden management office moved here to work. The new Liuhe Pavilion, with an area of 150 square meters, was opened as a bonsai garden mainly cultivating five-needle pines. In 1992, an investment of 8 million yuan was made for expansion, increasing the park area by 2.4 hectares. In the expanded eastern area, water-based amusement is the main feature. There are a number of amusement facilities such as “Flume Ride”, “Water Canoeing”, “Grand View Cable Car”, “Elevated Vehicle”, “Double Flying”, and “Bumper Cars”, along with various architectural sketches, lawns, and jungle green areas. In 1995, another investment of 8 million yuan was made to build an early real ice skating rink and a large lawn in the province.
