Shaoxing Xuanjuan is a traditional storytelling art with religious overtones, primarily used for worshipping deities and praying for blessings. It has existed since the Tang Dynasty and evolved into a form of quyi (曲艺), or traditional performing arts, by the Qing Dynasty. The script used for Xuanjuan performances is known as the scroll or ‘Baojuan’. Artists place the scroll on the table and perform according to the text, hence the name Xuanjuan. Shaoxing Xuanjuan is one of the five major quyi forms in the Shaoxing area and was included in the second batch of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection List in June 2008. Anchang Town is an important area for the development of Shaoxing Xuanjuan activities, with a long-standing tradition and numerous troupes and artists who remain active, contributing to the promotion of Shaoxing Xuanjuan. The opening hours are 08:00-17:00 from May 1st to September 30th, and 08:00-16:30 from October 1st to April 30th.
