Shejitan, located within Zhongshan Park, is an altar from the Ming and Qing dynasties dedicated to the worship of the gods of earth and grains, also known as She and Ji. Emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties frequently conducted sacrifices here, making it a place of high status. The altar is a three-tiered square structure, surrounded by a protective wall with glazed tiles in blue, red, white, and black arranged in the cardinal directions, with a white marble lattice gate, known as the Lingxing Gate, at the center of each wall.
The altar is decorated with soil from all over the country, representing five different colors, which is a unique feature in ancient architecture and worth a visit.Surrounding Shejitan, there are also palace buildings and exhibition halls from the Ming and Qing periods, where visitors can explore and take photographs. Notable structures like the Baowei Peace Arch have a long history and encapsulate stories about China’s rise and fall over the past century, making it worth observing the details beneath the arch.
