Shen’ao Village is located at the northern foot of Tianzi Hill on the south bank of the Fuchun River in Tonglu County, Zhejiang Province. It is 16.5 kilometers west of Tonglu County seat. Situated in hilly areas, it is high in the south and low in the north. The village faces Xuanshan Mountain in the front and is backed by Shiyan Mountain in the rear. The residential area is rectangular. There is an old street in the middle, running from south to north, more than 500 meters long and about 3 meters wide. Paved with pebbles, there is an underground concealed canal for drawing spring water (commonly known as ‘ao’). The water in the ‘ao’ is deep and clear, hence the name of the village. On both sides of the street, there are three lanes each, shaped like the Chinese character ‘非’. In the 1980s, a new street was built on both sides of the northern end of the highway and connected with the old street, forming the shape of the Chinese character ‘韭’. With a dense population, it is a relatively large village in Tonglu. Shen’ao Ancient Village is a blood-related village of the Shentu family. With its ancient culture, profound historical and cultural accumulation, unique geographical environment, and long-preserved cultural relics and historic sites, it has become a famous ancient village in the south of the Yangtze River in Tonglu. There are more than 40 hall buildings in the village, which are ancient buildings of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Among them, the Jiushi Hall and the Rulin Hall are relatively old, and the Zhumudi and Zhicheng and Yiyan gate towers have unique artistic styles.
