The Shenlongshan Ba People’s Ancient Fortress tourist area is located in the southern suburb of Guang’an City, only 1.5 kilometers away from the city center. It is named because its mountain is abrupt and dangerous, and winds and stretches like a soaring dragon. Here was once a fortress and a place for worship, prayer, and observing celestial phenomena in ancient Ba State. The ancient fortress is constructed of tens of thousands of stone blocks weighing tons, so it is also called the Ba People’s Stone City.
Shenlongshan is an important route between ancient Ba State and Qin and Shu. It points east to Jingchu, guards Hudu in the south, connects Shuhan in the west, and looks north to Sanqin. It is one of the important gateways of Ba State. It controls the important passes in the north and south and guards the throat in the east and west. It is easy to defend but difficult to attack. It was the most important passage into Ba State at that time and has been a place contested by military strategists since ancient times. The core part, the Yifeng City, is a military fortress left by ancient Ba State. It is composed of Longmen Pass, Tuzhou Lake, and Longtai. The construction date cannot be verified. Due to the long history and frequent wars, the original castle has long been in ruins. The current Yifeng City is restored and repaired according to the original site. According to historical records, Guang’an was once one of the main habitats of the ancient Ba people’s Bandun barbarians. This castle was built at the end of the Warring States Period more than 2,000 years ago. It is a military fortress established by the ancient Ba people to protect the then capital Jiangzhou (Chongqing) and later Langzhong. After King Zhaoxiang of Qin destroyed Ba State in 316 BC, this place became a fortified city for the Ba people’s Bandun barbarians. After the Sui and Tang Dynasties, with the decline of the political status and influence of the Ba people’s Bandun barbarians, Yifeng City gradually evolved into a military castle of local regimes. In the Southern Song Dynasty, in more than 20 years from the third year of Chunyou to the second year of Xianchun, it was an important fortress to resist the invasion of the Mongolian army. In modern times, due to the melee of warlords, the wealthy and powerful families of the descendants of the Ba people have occupied the mountains and established themselves as kings one after another, choosing dangerous places to build stockades and living together in clans. Today’s scenic area is shaded by green trees and there are many blockhouses. It is simple and solemn. The majestic architectural style and straight lines of the Ba people stand in front of tourists. It is the only remaining Ba people’s cultural relic in the country.
