After a year of hiatus, Bad Sweetheart’s second full-length album ‘You Fell Asleep Behind the Curtain’ was officially released at midnight on November 14th. This marks their latest extensive work following the EP ‘GoodGood BadBad’ from two years ago. Like a long summer break between semesters, dear friends and we meet again as promised today. With the intro track ‘Rabbit Sitting in Place’ rolling in, the awkward yet agile distorted guitar brings back the youth fragments trapped in the shaky handheld DV lens, entwined in our hearts and minds as if they were before our eyes. ‘Naturally’ and ‘I Do What I Wanna Do’ make one unconsciously tap their toes to the beat; ‘You Don’t Need a Photo’ perfectly imprints this autumn visually and audibly in your mind; the varied ‘2029’ along with the meaningful conclusion, the intense ‘Rowing Race’ makes one’s palms sweat, concluding the nearly 60-minute music in memories… ‘Some things we thought we had lost, we mobilized all our friends to search for, only to find that they hadn’t been lost at all, they were just asleep behind the curtain.’ ‘You Fell Asleep Behind the Curtain’ includes 13 tracks, some of which were shown in their original form during the 2023 tour; more as the album says, it is the compilation of Bad Sweetheart’s ‘verbose worries’ at every stage since its establishment, through many summers and autumns. From the first album ‘That’s Enough for Today’, the hidden thoughts between mobile notes and voice recorders were gradually discovered and shared, to the different expression adopted after growth in ‘GoodGood BadBad’, now after the test of friendship, the trio of He Mingyang, Li Fan, and Jiang Honglang choose to move forward, embracing every challenge with a persistent DIY spirit and a life attitude that laughs until tears come. Earlier, the band released the self-made MV for the pre-release song ‘Drowsy Rainy Day’. The blue bedding makes one feel comfortable and secure, our lives are like the protagonist played by drummer Li Fan, pulled out from the mysterious bed one by one, all happiness, threats, and security are clear in the small Simmons world. The three members acted in their true colors with the help of friends, which was also their first attempt to shoot an MV for their own song, the fun of which is no less than a middle school experimental class group project.
Low-cost creation yields abundant results, with the belief that ‘1000 yuan can perhaps accomplish anything’. Following the restored supervisory videos, we witness Bad Sweetheart moving into the rehearsal room in Li Fan’s new home basement, recording their musical inspirations with perhaps not-so-expensive yet highly convenient second-hand equipment. With a simple shout of ‘Go!’, they can instantly get into the groove, and their cheerful laughter still resonates in daily life.
Perhaps the Bad Sweetheart of today is no longer the same as when they first met everyone a few years ago, but the way we share happiness with each other and with everyone has never changed. A new way of working, a new phase, and the footsteps of new plans are drawing ever closer… There is no need to worry about what is lost; the real excitement is still hidden in unexpected places, waiting for you to discover.
