Shi Fo Mountain, also known as Shi Fo Ridge, is located within the territory of Yao Village, Langxi County, with its main peak reaching 353 meters. The mountain is characterized by its steep terrain and is often encircled by white clouds. At the summit, there are three giant rocks, approximately 10 meters high, resembling stone Buddhas. According to legend, in the seventh year of the Kaiyuan era of the Tang Dynasty (719 AD), Prince Kim Jo-gak of Silla (later known as Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva) left home to become a monk and traveled across the seas to the Tang Dynasty.
He wandered the world in search of a place to settle. One golden autumn, he arrived at this mountain and saw the three large rocks at the top, which looked like three great Buddhas. He intended to settle here and thus asked a woodcutter about the name of the mountain. The woodcutter replied, ‘These great Buddhas can support the clouds of thirty-three feet, hence it is called ‘Stone Buddha Supporting Clouds. ‘ The prince thought that the head of a Buddha could not be used for settlement, so he left to search elsewhere. The northern slope of the mountain is steep and precipitous, while the southern slope is gentle and easy to climb, with a flat area at the top. The mountain is covered with pine, cypress, and green bamboo, forming a forest. There are also grotesque and dangerous rocks in various shapes and sizes, some as large as houses, scattered everywhere. These dangerous rocks have been formed over time by wind erosion, creating a spectacle. The world has summarized ten major stone scenes: ‘Cloud-Supporting Stone’, ‘Monk Stone’, ‘Frog Croaking Stone’, ‘Golden Turtle Stone’, ‘Wooden Fish Stone’, ‘Wall Stone’, ‘Seven Zhang Stone’, ‘Peach Stone’, ‘Box Cabinet Stone’. On the southern slope, the huge rectangular Frog Croaking Stone, also known as the Three-Legged Stone, hangs over a smooth rock wall, giving people the feeling that it will fall with a touch, but when approached and pushed, it is as stable as Mount Tai. ‘Seven Zhang Stone’ is a row of large rocks near the top during the ascent. It looks like a copper wall and iron wall. When the weather is fine and the sky is clear, climbing up and looking into the distance, one can see the sparkling waves and sails of Nan Yi Lake, as well as the transportation and rural landscape of Langxi, Guangde, and Xuanzhou.
