Known as the ‘town in a painting’, Shitang, a thousand-year-old sunny town, is located southeast of Songmen Town, Wenling City. Here, it is embraced by the blue sea and has beautiful scenery. Its landscape is famous far and wide for its characteristics that combine the ingenuity of nature and the craftsmanship of humans. It is praised as the ‘Notre Dame de Paris in the East’ and the ‘cradle of painters’. Stone-built architecture: The buildings in Shitang Town are all close to the mountains and the sea, built with blocks of stone. They are scattered at different heights in an orderly manner. Stone houses, stone streets, stone alleys, and stone steps are unique and very characteristic and beautiful. In the mountain col of four or five square kilometers around Shitang, there are all stone-built architectures of ‘houses biting mountains and mountains hugging houses’, in groups of three or five, at different heights in an orderly manner, forming a stone carving group. The representative is a three or four-story stone castle building, which is made of rectangular stones and stacked very neatly. The shape is like a castle in medieval Europe. These ‘castles’, stone windows, and the buns of fisherwomen with flowers inserted on their heads are deeply imbued with the solemnity of history, the vicissitudes of years, and the simple folk customs. Millennium Dawn Monument: At 6:46 on January 1, 2000, the first ray of dawn in the new millennium first shone on Shitang, Wenling on the Chinese mainland. In order to turn this millennial moment into an eternal memory, according to the arrangements of the organizing committee of the ‘China Millennium Dawn Festival’, Shitang, Wenling has built the epoch-making ‘Millennium Dawn Monument’ and observation deck. The commemorative Dawn Monument stands majestically in the center of the Dawn Observation Garden. The two opposite monument columns stand tall, like two raised door panels, symbolizing that the door of the new century has been opened. In addition, Shitang has more unique festivals with ancient fishing village customs such as Dazougu, Kangtai Pavilion, and the Little People’s Festival on July 7, where you can feel the vitality of the ancient southern Fujian folk customs life.
