Shimen Mountain, named for its two opposing mountains resembling a stone gate, boasts towering peaks, lush forests, and picturesque scenery. The mountain is rich in historical sites and legends, including the spot where Confucius is said to have written the ‘I Ching – Xici’, and where Li Bai and Du Fu bid farewell during their travels in the Qi and Lu regions. Kong Shangren also lived in seclusion here twice, before and after his official career.
The site features relics such as the place where Confucius wrote the ‘I Ching’, the farewell spot of Li and Du, Qiushui Pavilion, and Kong Shangren’s hermitage. On the mountain stands Shimen Temple, the only temple in Qufu. It includes structures like the Thousand Buddhas Hall and the Scripture Repository, housing statues of the Three Buddhas and the Eighteen Arhats. Shimen Mountain features twenty-four scenic spots, such as the Ice and Snow Brook and the Wisteria Canopy, with ‘Shimen Moonlight’ being the most famous. Near Shimen Mountain, 15 kilometers from the city center, lies Shimen Academy, one of the four major academies in Qufu in the old days.
