Shimen Gorge is located within the Qingliang Peak Nature Reserve, composed of three distinctive scenic areas: Jianmen, Humen, and Longmen, each with its unique style. The natural scenery is unparalleled, and classic ancient costume dramas such as the new ‘A Chinese Ghost Story’ and ‘Sword Butterfly’ were filmed here.
Within the scenic area, there are ten kilometers of picturesque canyons, nearly a hundred kilometers of natural stone Great Wall that is majestic, and thirty thousand acres of mysterious primeval forests. Especially in severe winters, all waterfalls freeze, and all snow-capped peaks stand like pillars, creating a rare ‘northern scenery’ in the south of the Yangtze River. An outdoor rock climbing base has also been established here, making it an excellent destination for outdoor sports enthusiasts.
Shimen Gorge has always been a strategic location for military contention, hence it is known as the ‘Zhejiang Gate’. It boasts a rich cultural heritage, a wealth of historical relics, and natural landscapes. Currently, Humen and Jianmen scenic areas are open to the public. The Jianmen scenic area, once the first of the ‘Tang Chang Top Ten Scenic Spots’, is acclaimed as the ‘First Stone Gate of China’. The natural stone Great Wall spans hundreds of kilometers, and due to the multiple gaps in the stone wall, a total of 27 distinctive stone gates are formed naturally, with the small stone gate being the most remarkable, with a width of less than 7 meters and a height of up to a hundred meters.
The stone gates, stone Great Wall, and surrounding peaks form a natural stone city, encircling several villages. The Longmen scenic area features a significant waterfall cluster in East China – the ‘Eighteen Dragon Pools’, with 18 large waterfalls cascading down from cliffs thousands of feet high, forming a group of waterfalls and a series of deep pools. It is said to be the treasure palace inhabited by the Dragon King. Surrounding the Dragon Pools is over thirty thousand acres of primeval forest, with more than a thousand ancient and famous trees, most of which are over 200 years old, and some up to 800 years old.
The entire area is open from January 1st to December 31st, from 08:00 to 16:30.
