Shouzhuo Garden is a quintessential example of the ‘relocation for protection and utilization’ model of ancient architecture, initiated in April 2013 with a planned investment of 100 million yuan. The garden spans an area of 84.9 acres and primarily focuses on Tao Yuanming’s cultural studies, exhibitions, and derivative industries. It is built in the residence of the Tao family’s descendants, featuring four main functional areas: the Tao Yuanming Cultural Exhibition Area, Tao Yuanming’s Former Residence Living Exhibition Area, Peach Blossom Culture Research Center, and Management Area.
The garden aims to integrate Taoist cultural studies, leisure and health, intangible cultural heritage displays, and tourism into a comprehensive new tourism paradigm. It recreates the production and living scenes of the era of Tao Yuanming, catering to urbanites’ needs for leisure, vacation, exploring ancient sites, and rural health preservation. Shouzhuo Garden is located in Tao Village (Chi Ling Village), the settlement of Tao Geng, a descendant of Tao Yuanming’s second son, Tao Si. The village still preserves numerous historical sites and cultural relics, such as the well-preserved Tao Family Genealogy, Tao Family Ancestral Cemetery, Tao Family Pond, Tao Ling Ancient Post Road, and Tao Family Ancestral Hall.
