Shun Emperor’s Mausoleum Scenic Area

The Shun Emperor’s Mausoleum Scenic Area is located in Jiuyi Mountain, 30 kilometers south of Ningyuan County. It is the core scenic area of Jiuyi Mountain. Here is the mausoleum and temple of Shun Emperor, one of the ‘Five Emperors’, the ancestor of the Chinese nation. The scenic area takes Shun Emperor’s Mausoleum and related inscriptions and historical sites, strange peaks and caves, rock carvings, lakes and mountains, and poetry stele forests as the tour themes. Shun Emperor died during his southern inspection in the wilderness of Cangwu and was buried in Jiuyi Mountain. The mausoleum area is composed of the mausoleum mountain (Shunyuan Peak), Shun Mausoleum Temple, the sacred way and the cemetery. Shunyuan Peak, the mausoleum mountain, is small at the top and large at the bottom, in an inverted bucket shape, with magnificent momentum. It has now been opened as a park. The altitude of the mountain peak is not high. Because it is the place where Shun Emperor is buried, it has always been a forbidden place. Therefore, there are towering ancient trees here, and almost the entire mountain is covered by vegetation, making it a natural forest oxygen bar. At the northern foot of the mountain, there is a mausoleum temple. The mausoleum temple faces north and is of large scale. It is divided into two courtyards, front and back, and five rows of buildings. Inside the mausoleum temple, there are solemn mountain gates, Meridian Gate, worship halls, main halls, sleeping halls, and wing rooms. Outside the mausoleum temple, there is a 200-meter-long sacred way with stone figures and stone beasts standing on both sides. In the main hall of the mausoleum temple, the momentum is magnificent and solemn. To the northeast in front of the hall, there is a ‘Ode to Pacifying the Yao People’ stele, about 3 meters high, which was erected in 1576, the fourth year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty. Around the main hall, there are towering ancient trees. There were originally fifteen fragrant fir trees beside the temple, but now they have all died of old age. Inside the main hall, there is a bronze statue of Shun Emperor. He is sitting upright, holding a sword in his right hand, with a majestic bearing. Behind the bronze statue is the ‘Picture of Ten Thousand Mountains Paying Homage to Shun’. On the guardrails around the main hall, there are carved the scenery of Jiuyi, legends about Shun Emperor and stories of famous people of all ages and Jiuyi, all with text descriptions. Out of the main hall, one arrives at the sleeping hall. Here is close to Shunyuan Peak. In the middle is the stele of ‘The Mausoleum of Shun Emperor Youyu’. Worshiping Shun Emperor has been carried out in all dynasties. During the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty, the rule of a grand sacrifice every three years and a small sacrifice every year was set and has been in use until now. Below the sleeping hall, there are stele corridors on the left and right, displaying 32 sacrificial steles. Among them, He Shaoji’s ‘Imperial Sacrificial Oration’ is a masterpiece.
