Shuzhuang Garden is well-arranged with its various scenic spots. The architectural style is a combination of Fujian style and Western elements. Built by the sea, it is unique and stunning. It is mainly divided into two parts: Canghai Garden and Bushan Garden. The main scenic spots include the Piano Museum, Twelve Caves, and Forty-four Bridge. The Forty-four Bridge is a very good place to view the sea.

The garden was built in 1913 and is located in the south of Gulangyu. It was originally the private villa of the famous gentleman Lin Erjia. In 1956, the relatives of the garden owner donated this garden to the country. The main landscape of Bushan Garden is the rockery, that is, the scenic spot Twelve Caves. It has 12 cave chambers, which are numbered according to the Earthly Branches. The garden owner uses the ‘caves’ in ‘blessed caves and lands’ and calls it ‘Twelve Caves’.

Later, the twelve Chinese zodiac signs are inlaid at various cave entrances. Interested tourists can look for the stone statues of various zodiac signs. In Canghai Garden, the main thing is to go to the scenic spot Forty-four Bridge to view the sea. The reason it is called Canghai instead of viewing the sea is that when you arrive at the garden gate or even enter the main gate, you cannot see the sea.

There will be a high wall blocking your view. On the inside lintel of the garden gate, the plaque ‘Canghai’ is hung high. But when you turn out of the moon gate, the sea will suddenly appear in front of you. Then you can walk to the Forty-four Bridge, which is a good place to view the sea. It is named after the owner was forty-four years old when building the bridge. Under this bridge, there is a sluice gate that introduces seawater into the garden, forming three parts: the sea, the outer pool, and the inner pool, hiding the sea inside.

The Piano Museum is located in the Tingtao Pavilion of Shuzhuang Garden. In the museum, there will be impromptu performances on a special performance piano every half an hour. Around 11:00, there is an automatic piano performance in the first hall. At 11:20, there are staff playing the piano on site in the second hall. It is worth listening to!
