Simian Mountain

The Simian Mountain scenic area is located in the southwest of Chongqing. It is more than 100 kilometers away from Chongqing main city, Luzhou in Sichuan Province, and Zunyi in Guizhou Province. It is in the core area of the tourism golden triangle of Chongqing, Sichuan and Guizhou. It is a national 5A-level tourist scenic area and resort area very close to Chongqing main city. It can be reached in only 1.


5 hours. It is more than 60 kilometers away from Jiangjin District. It belongs to the remaining vein of the northern wing of Dalou Mountain in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and is an inverted mountain in geology. In 1988, the scenic area was designated as a ‘Chongqing municipal-level nature reserve’. In 2014, it was rated as ‘Chongqing’s first batch of municipal-level tourist resorts’ and ‘Famous Chinese cultural tourism scenery influencing the world’.


In 2015, it was rated as a ‘national 5A-level tourist scenic area’, ‘national ecological tourism demonstration area’, and ‘China’s forest oxygen bar’. In 2017, it was rated as a ‘national demonstration unit of sports industry’. In 2019, it was rated as ‘China (Chongqing) climate tourism destination’. In 2020, it was rated as ‘China’s climate health resort’. The scenic area covers an area of 213.37 square kilometers.


The main core scenic areas include Wangxiangtai, Tudi Rock, Longtan Lake, Honghai, Pearl Lake, Shuikousi, Huilongzhuang, and Love Ladder, with 128 scenic spots. The natural landscape is unique, the ecological environment is beautiful, and the tourism resources are rich, with great recreational value. It is a tourist destination for leisure and vacation. Due to its good mountains and waters, rich selenium and oxygen, it has attracted much attention.


It is praised by experts of the International Ecological Society as one of the regions with abundant vegetation, good water quality, and pure air in the world. The four landscape resource characteristics of ‘strange mountains’, ‘unique waters’, ‘red stones’, and ‘rich culture’ are obvious: – Strange mountains: The altitude of Simian Mountain is 560 – 1709.4 meters. The summer temperature is 22 – 25 degrees Celsius.


The average annual temperature is 13.7 degrees Celsius. The forest coverage rate is as high as 96%. The content of negative oxygen ions is as high as more than 29,000 per cubic centimeter. It is the only subtropical original evergreen broad-leaved forest belt with a large area and well-preserved protection at 28 degrees north latitude on the earth. There are nearly 3,700 rare animals and plants such as Chinese double-fan fern, Alsophila spinulosa, Taxus chinensis, forest musk deer, macaque, Chinese fish, Chinese merganser, and弹琴蛙.


It is praised by experts of the International Ecological Society as a ‘natural species gene bank’. – Unique waters: Simian Mountain has three water systems: Feilong River, Chaba River, and Linxian River. There are nine lakes above 800 meters above sea level, forming a large-scale alpine lake group. The water area reaches 5 square kilometers. It has a world-renowned alpine waterfall group represented by Wangxiangtai Waterfall, the ‘highest waterfall in China’.


Among them, there are three waterfalls with a vertical drop of more than 100 meters, eleven waterfalls with a vertical drop of more than 80 meters, and thirty-seven waterfalls with a vertical drop of more than 50 meters. It has the reputation of ‘the hometown of thousands of waterfalls’. – Red stones: Due to its unique geographical location and natural conditions, there are diverse genetic types, with 107 geological heritage scenic spots.


Simianshan simultaneously possesses a rare geological relic composed of a complete combination of ‘Danxia red cliffs – urn-shaped enclosed valleys – alpine waterfalls’. The Danxia landform represented by Tudi Rock was developed in the Jiaguan Formation of the Late Cretaceous period between 96 million and 65 million years ago and is of great value as a world natural heritage. The mural on Tudi Rock is 376 meters long, 127 meters high, and covers an area of nearly 50,000 square meters.


It is known as the ‘Asian Divine Rock’. Thick text: Simianshan has left behind the cultural relics of the Xianba people dating back more than 5,000 years – the Huiqianyan cliff mural. There are also humanistic landscapes such as Taoist cultural sites, Chaoyuan Temple, Wenjia Stockade, the first manor in southwest China – Huilongzhuang, the West Shaolin Temple in China – the Shaolin Temple in Simianshan, and the love culture represented by the Love Ladder, all of which have important historical and cultural value.
