The Hanlin Academy ruins are located in the Dongcheng District, originally the site of the Honglu Temple during the Ming Dynasty. In the seventh year of the Ming Dynasty’s Zhengtong period, the Hanlin Academy was established here. The Qing Dynasty’s Hanlin Academy featured five main rooms within the Dengying Gate, with the lecture hall to the west and the editing hall to the east. Within the left corridor gate is the Zhuangyuan Hall, and within the right corridor gate are the Changli Shrine and the Tugu Shrine.

Behind the hall is a passageway, with the imperial decree hall on the left and the clerk’s hall on the right. Further back is the rear hall, which contains the emperor’s throne when he visits. The eastern and western rooms of the rear hall serve as the library. After the Yongzheng era, the Hanlin Academy became an important national institution for talent storage. Open all year round, the site is open all day but not open to the public.
