The Songjing Pavilion is an ancient well located within Shen Garden, a relic from the Song Dynasty, hence its name. However, the character for ‘well’ on the pavilion’s plaque features an extra horizontal stroke, as the well’s shape resembles a human eye, earning it another name, the ‘Double Eyes Well’. There is a saying that one eye represents Lu’s mother, and the other represents Tang Wan, with the extra stroke symbolizing how Lu’s mother separated them. Yet the water in the well is connected, indicating that Lu You and Tang Wan’s hearts were always together. Originally, the well was not shaped like this; there was a wall dividing it, making it a shared well for two families. When Shen Garden was reconstructed, the wall was removed, resulting in the current shape we see today. The garden is open all year round, accessible 24/7.
