Located 20 kilometers southeast of Danzhou city, Songtao Reservoir spans across Danzhou and Bai Sha counties, and is renowned as the ‘Pearl of the Treasure Island’ highland heaven pool. Situated in the upper reaches of the Nan Du River, construction began in 1958 and took a decade to complete, making it one of China’s larger earthen dam projects. With a height of 81.1 meters and a length of 760 meters, it impounds the surging waters of the Nan Du River in the Nanyang and Fanjia valleys.

The reservoir area covers 144 square kilometers and contains over 300 islands. Its total storage capacity is 3.34 billion cubic meters, capturing rainwater from an area of 1,400 square kilometers on both banks of the upper Nan Du River. Through a network of channels, it connects a multitude of water conservancy projects, forming a unified irrigation system that waters the western and northwestern lands of Hainan Island.

With its vast reservoir area and over 100 islands scattered across the vast waters, surrounded by mountains and covered with dense primeval forests, Songtao Reservoir not only benefits agriculture, fisheries, and industry but also serves as an ideal place for cooling off, vacationing, and sightseeing on Hainan Island. A popular attraction is boat tours around the reservoir, where visitors can glide over the clear waters, admiring the undulating mountains, towering ancient trees, tranquil lake waters, and fishing boats that seem to emerge from the paintings, providing a feeling of traveling within a landscape.
