Southeastern Barrier

Near East Cave. Walking south from Aishan Pavilion, one can see a solitary peak standing. The whole peak is composed of three huge rocks in a ‘pin’ shape. After climbing dozens of stone steps, there is a feeling of being overwhelmed by Mount Tai. This is the outstanding Jinping Peak among the numerous strange peaks and rocks in Nanyandang Mountain. Also known as Stone Screen and Stone Gate Tower. This has been a major scenic spot in Nanyandang Mountain throughout the ages. It was developed in the middle of the Tang Dynasty and was called Stone Gate Tower in the Song Dynasty. Chen Yougong of the Song Dynasty had the poem ‘Surrounded by Yandang Mountain for a hundred li, the stone gate is naturally set without the need for closing.’ Huang Qingxiao of the Qing Dynasty had the poem ‘Rising jaggedly like a painted screen. The meandering water embraces several green mountains.’ This peak is 33 meters high, 50 meters wide and about 4 meters thick. Under the main peak is a cave entrance, 4 meters high and 6 meters wide. There is a cliff inscription of ‘Southeastern Barrier’ on the lintel. Looking south through the cave entrance, there are two rocks connected, one like a snake head and the other like a turtle, known as ‘Turtle and Snake Meeting’. There are also two huge rocks, one like a lion and the other like a tiger, called ‘Lion and Tiger Fight’. Looking at this peak from the mountain ridge, it is like a ‘reception monk’ wearing a square hat, courteously welcoming tourists with his sleeves hanging down, competing with the ‘reception monk’ of Beiyandang Mountain in showing hospitality. The specific opening hours and business status are subject to the opening situation on that day.
