St. John’s Cathedral, completed in 1849, has a history of nearly 200 years. Its light yellow English-style architecture stands serene and solemn amidst the bustling city of Central. It is now the cathedral church of the Anglican Diocese of Hong Kong and Macau, holding an undeniable status in the local area.
Following Garden Road towards the direction of Victoria Peak, one can soon spot the cathedral, nestled among greenery. This building combines the architectural styles of early 13th-century English and ornate Gothic, featuring numerous colonnades and cross decorations. The central nave is flanked by side aisles, with the church’s overall color being white, and the stone tower is beige, adorned with four small spires, and emblazoned with Queen Victoria’s coat of arms at the front. Every 15 minutes, the deep and rich tolling of the bell from the bell tower can be heard. Access to the cathedral’s interior is through the west door, where the decoration is elegant and ornate. Upon entering, one finds a baptismal font, a mosaic of the Holy Trinity on the floor, and various patterns on the flooring. A close look reveals an eagle beneath the cross, the symbol of St. John, signifying the church’s identity. Each window is adorned with exquisite stained glass, depicting biblical figures and stories, with outdoor light shining through the colored glass, casting a tranquil atmosphere. Outside the main entrance, there is a memorial dedicated to the martyrs of the World Wars, with tombstones nearby. Additionally, a memorial stone is embedded in the northern wall of the church, commemorating Captain William, who fell in battle in Guangzhou in 1857. There is also a small garden outside the church, where one can take a walk and relax amidst the greenery, after experiencing the sanctity of history and religion.
