St. Michael’s Church, located on Zhejiang Road, was established in 1934 and boasts an impressive spire, making it a renowned Western-style building in Qingdao. The church features elegant and simple patterns on its exterior, complemented by light-colored walls and a slightly pink red roof, creating a rich and sweet color palette that has attracted countless couples for wedding photography.
Upon entering the church, one is struck by its spacious and bright interior. The main hall towers over ten meters high with an aisle down the center, flanked by rows of seats and corridors on either side, each featuring two confessionals for priests to hear confessions from the faithful. At the end of the aisle and corridors stands the altar, above which is a dome adorned with exquisite frescoes. The most eye-catching feature of the church is its stained glass windows, casting a soft light throughout the space.
Every Sunday, the church holds a Sunday Mass, but during the service, visitors are not allowed to run around and explore; they must sit quietly at the back and maintain a respectful silence. The church houses an expensive pipe organ imported from Germany, which resembles a piano and is only played during the Sunday Mass.
Surrounding attractions of St. Michael’s Church include many points of interest. Heading north along Zhongshan Road leads to the food-famous Pichai Court; heading south along Zhongshan Road takes you to the coastal Zhan Bridge, from which you can follow the seaside for leisurely strolls. To the east of the church lies Signal Hill Park, among other attractions, allowing visitors to plan their sightseeing routes according to personal preferences.
The church is open from Monday to Saturday, 08:30 to 17:00, and on Sundays, 12:00 to 17:00. Worship services are held every Sunday from 08:00 to 12:00, during which the church is not open to visitors.
