Sun Yat-sen University (South Campus)

Most of the buildings of Sun Yat-sen University are in red series, presenting an antique look and full of charm. You can tour the campus, walk on the tree-lined avenue, recall the youthful campus days, see Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s ten-character school motto and feel the academic atmosphere. Sun Yat-sen University has three campuses and five school areas. Generally, the South Campus is the one that tourists will visit.

The South Campus used to be Lingnan University. There are many old houses, some of which are even covered with moss, and some can already be regarded as dilapidated walls and broken tiles. However, the school has no intention of demolishing them at all because they witness the growth and rise of Sun Yat-sen University. There are lush trees around the red old houses. The avenue is completely covered by tree shade.

The combination of simplicity and tranquility is just right. The south school gate is the main gate of the South Campus of Sun Yat-sen University. Entering from the south gate, you can first see the towering trees on both sides of the main road. These trees are all over a hundred years old. Walking on the tree-lined avenue, there is a kind of tranquility in your mood. The famous buildings of Sun Yat-sen University are all on the main road, so you can just tour along the main road.

After walking a short distance, you can see the small bell tower in front of Liang Qiuju Hall. In front of the small bell tower, there is Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s ten-character school motto of ‘Erudition, Inquiry, Reflection, Discrimination, and Practice’, which can be taken as a photo souvenir. Then you can see a large lawn. The main road is divided into two by a lawn. Here, the key points are Swasey Hall and Yongfang Hall on the west side.

In front of Yongfang Hall, there are 18 bronze statues of 18 people from Guangdong or with deep origins in Guangdong who have had a significant impact on Chinese history. You can pay respects. Return to the main road and continue forward to see the statue of Sun Yat-sen and the bell pavilion. To the east of the bell pavilion is the large bell tower, which is also a very distinctive building. Walking further forward, you can see the Archway of Scholars in the Yichou Year.

The Archway of Scholars in the Yichou Year is built of sandstone, and the stone plaque is engraved with the four characters ‘Scholars in the Yichou Year’, which is very simple. Then passing Rongguang Hall and a pond, you will be near the north gate. The square in front of the north school gate faces the Pearl River with a wide view and is very grand. Here there is also a Zhongda Wharf where you can take a boat to the other side.

You can see the Canton Tower by the river. Of course, in addition to the south gate and north gate, there are also east and west gates on the campus. You can enter from any of them without any special requirements. The west gate and east gate are respectively next to Zhongda Station and Lujiang Station on Metro Line 2, with Xingang Road on the south and the Pearl River on the north.

Opening hours: Open all year round from 09:00 to 18:00. Temporarily not open to people outside the school. The specific business status is subject to the opening situation on that day.
