Sunlight Rock is formed by two massive boulders, one vertical and one horizontal, leaning against each other. It stands as the highest peak of Gulangyu Island and is one of the island’s scenic overlooks. From this vantage point, one can take in the panoramic views of the city of Xiamen, the entirety of Gulangyu Island, and the vast sea, including the islands of Dadan and Erdan. Located in the southern part of Gulangyu Island in Xiamen, it is commonly known as ‘Yan Zai Mountain’ and is also called ‘Huang Rock’.
It is said that in 1641, Zheng Chenggong visited Huang Rock and, impressed by the scenery surpassing that of Japan’s Nikko Mountain, he split the character ‘huang’ and named it ‘Sunlight Rock’. The top of the rock is surrounded by a railing, forming a small viewing platform. It is important to note that during peak season, the platform can become very crowded due to its small size. Therefore, if time permits, it is advisable to visit in the evening when there are fewer tourists and the scenery is uniquely beautiful. Within the Sunlight Rock scenic area, there is a small attraction called Sunlight Rock Temple, which interested visitors can conveniently visit. Opening hours are from June 1st to September 30th, 08:00-18:00; and from October 1st to May 31st, 08:00-17:30.Preferential policies for children/students: Half-price tickets are offered to young people (including those from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, etc.) aged between 6 years old (inclusive) and 18 years old (exclusive), as well as full-time university undergraduate and below students.
