Penglai Pavilion is located on the cliff by the sea to the north of Penglai City in the Yantai area of Shandong Province. It was first built in the Song Dynasty (i.e., 1070 AD) and has a history of more than 900 years. It is collectively known as one of the four famous ancient towers in China along with Tengwang Pavilion, Yellow Crane Tower, and Yueyang Tower. Penglai, known as a fairyland, has been a place where emperors of Qin and Han dynasties sought immortals and herbs since ancient times. Legend has it that Penglai, Yingzhou, and Fangzhang are three sacred mountains in the sea and places where immortals live. The widely spread mythological legend of ‘Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea’ originated here. Watching the sunrise over Fusang at Penglai Pavilion is an unmissable experience. The scenery is magnificent and unique. From a patch of fiery red on the eastern horizon to breaking through layers of clouds and emitting thousands of rays of sunlight, it is stunning and charming.
