Tai Mountain Shadow Puppetry is considered a living fossil of the arts, with a history of over a hundred years of tradition. The sixth-generation inheritor, Fan Zheng’an, performs the Chinese shadow puppetry masterpiece ‘Shi Bu Xian’, which is acclaimed as ‘The Ultimate Skill of China’ and has been awarded the title of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
In the selection of materials, Tai Mountain Shadow Puppetry uses pure donkey skin, with concise and lively knife techniques, and strong color contrasts, often employing traditional folk colors such as red, green, yellow, and purple. In terms of carving, it emphasizes a general outline, and the character shapes mostly adopt a realistic approach. The knifework is simple and bold, reflecting the hearty and generous spirit of the people from Shandong. During performances, there are many fighting scenes among the puppets, which embody the bold and generous folk emotions of the locals.
In addition to enjoying the drama, the shadow puppet product ‘Tai Mountain Shi Gandang’ has become a popular handicraft with Tai Mountain characteristics, loved by many tourists and collected by collectors both domestically and internationally. The venue is open all year round from 10:00 to 18:00, with theater performances at 10:00, 15:00, 16:00, and 17:00.
