Taimu Mountain is the central scenic area of the Taimu Mountain Scenic and Historic Interest Area. Legend has it that during the time of Emperor Yao, an old mother cultivated orchids in the mountains, encountered Taoist priests, and ascended to immortality, hence the name ‘Taimu’. It features various sightseeing areas from bottom to top, including Yuhu Temple, Guoxing Temple, Lover’s Valley, Immortal’s Platform, Gourd Cave, A Tile, Jiuli Peak, and Miao Xiao Peak, among others.
Due to the vastness of Taimu Mountain, it is recommended to allocate two days for a visit, allowing for a more relaxed and unhurried experience. Accommodations can be found either on the mountain or in the nearby Qinyu Town at the foot of the mountain. Buses generally arrive at the square in front of Taimu Mountain, which is also the Yuhu Temple scenic area, with main attractions including the statue of Taimu Niangniang and Pingxing Temple. Since Pingxing Temple is a Buddhist academy and not open to the public, visitors typically take photos with the statue of Taimu Niangniang as a memento.
At the end of the square, one can see a black plaque with the three characters ‘Taimu Mountain’, signifying the beginning of the journey. The first area to visit is the Guoxing Temple scenic area, where one can gaze up at the iconic Taimu Mountain peaks, Husband and Wife Peak, and the spectacular Eighteen Arhats Rock Formation. Following the right walking path, one can soon see the Stone Pagoda Lingqia Stupa and the ruins of Guoxing Temple, which was built during the Tang Dynasty. Behind the temple, one can visit Longtan Lake to admire the unique peaks of Wulonggang and their reflections in the water.
Continuing forward, one encounters a winding stone path, known as Saga Ridge, with lush trees and blooming wildflowers along the way. After traversing Saga Ridge and climbing a vertical section of stone steps, one arrives at the Immortal’s Platform, where it is said that deities gather annually at Taimu Mountain, and Taimu Niangniang, as the hostess, welcomes them with a feast. Further up is the A Tile scenic area. Passing through the narrow One Line Sky Cave and the White Horse Cave leads to A Tile. The famous One Line Sky attraction features a thin, curved rock crevice between two dark, towering rocks, with faint light filtering down from the top, revealing the rainwater flowing down the rock walls, while the bottom remains pitch black.
The Taimu Niangniang Hall is also located in this scenic area and is a must-visit when coming to Taimu Mountain. Other attractions on the mountain include Miao Xiao Peak, Hongxue Cave, Lvxueya, Baiyun Temple, and Jiuli Lake. Taimu Mountain is particularly charming for its peaks, with the Miao Xiao Peak scenic area being an excellent place for a panoramic view. An interesting activity is cave exploration, with Hongxue Cave being one of the more enjoyable caves, featuring interconnected caves, passages, and tunnels, which makes for an intriguing experience (remember to bring a flashlight, or you can purchase one at the site, though it will likely be more expensive than outside). Exiting Hongxue Cave leads to Baiyun Temple.
At the ticket office, free maps are provided, and staff can help you draw a route map to avoid getting lost, as the signs within the scenic area are not very clear, and many caves are one-way paths.
Follow the route mentioned above to enjoy the tour sequentially. For a day trip, you can dine in the town at the foot of the mountain where the food is affordable and delicious. If you stay at a hotel on the mountain, you generally dine directly at the hotel. Taimu Mountain Via Ferrata is the only one in the country that offers both mountain and sea views.
