Taishun is a mountainous county in the south of Zhejiang Province. It is adjacent to Wencheng in the northeast, Jingning in the northwest, and Fujian Province in the south. It has a total area of 1,700 square kilometers and is known as ‘nine mountains, half water and half field’. There are high mountains and long distances in the territory, with overlapping peaks and greenery. There are 179 peaks above 1,000 meters, with an average altitude of more than 490 meters. In history, many famous people and sages migrated to Taishun, this ‘peach blossom land’ with undulating mountains and few people, to avoid disasters and chaos, and created a local civilization with mountain pastoral characteristics, leaving many precious historical and cultural heritages. Taishun covered bridges are an outstanding representative among them. At present, there are more than 30 well-preserved wooden arch covered bridges of the Tang, Song, Ming and Qing dynasties in Taishun. The large number, ingenious craftsmanship, beautiful shapes and harmony with the surrounding environment are unrivaled in the history of bridges in the world and are a reproduction of the Hongqiao structure in ‘Along the River During the Qingming Festival’. Covered bridges are inlaid among the mountains like jewels, attracting the attention of experts at home and abroad. At the same time, it has also ushered in a boom in characteristic tourism of Taishun covered bridges. Covered bridges are mainly distributed in Sankui Town, Luoyang Town, Sixi Town, Xiaocun Town and Zhouling Township of Taishun County. There are shuttle buses between towns and townships, and the transportation is very convenient. It is suitable for self-driving or independent travel. The distribution of major covered bridges is as follows: Luoyang Town: Xianju Bridge; Zhouling Township: Santiao Bridge, Yuwen Bridge; Sankui Town: Xuezhai Bridge, Liuzhai Bridge, Yongqing Bridge; Xiaocun Town: Wenxing Bridge, Dongyang Bridge; Sixi Town: Xidong Bridge, Beijian Bridge, Nanyang Bridge. In addition to covered bridges, the Shishui stepping stones in Shiyang Town, the Hu Family Courtyard in Xuexi Township, the Bao Family Ancestral Hall in Sixi Town, and the ancient village of Xu’ao Di in Xiaocun Town are all famous tourist attractions, complementing Taishun covered bridges.
