The first solo museum exhibition of artist Tao Hui in Hong Kong. The boundary between reality and fiction becomes blurred in an unusual realm. The exhibition ‘Wasteland Hill’ examines and contemplates the human condition and contemporary Chinese society from another perspective. Combining elements such as painting, sculpture, video, sound, installation, and set design, Tao Hui’s solo exhibition leads the audience on a journey from north to south, from inland to coast, from city to country, and from industry to nature. It focuses on how Tao Hui explores various individual struggles through his absurd yet realistic artistic practice. These individuals include ethnic minorities stationed in the Hexi Corridor, migrant workers who flock to rapidly developing cities for survival, and the new rich class in pursuit of spiritual wealth. The artist weaves the harsh living environment, migration waves, and regional differences with people’s unremitting pursuit of beauty into surreal images, thereby providing a new perspective for understanding the complex reality of today. In addition to multiple newly commissioned video installations and sculpture works, the exhibition also includes the Asian premiere of ‘Hardship’ (2023), as well as recent works such as ‘From Sichuan to Shenzhen’ (2017) and ‘Uninhibited’ (2021). Opening hours: September 26th to February 2nd. The specific business status is subject to the opening situation on the day.
