On the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the Central Ballet, the classical ballet “La Bayadère”
Traveling through the long river of time, understand this poem that praises dance, memory, and time…

I. Story Background

The ballet “La Bayadère”, also known as “The Dancing Girl in the Indian Temple”, its story is derived from the drama “Shakuntala” by the ancient Indian poet and dramatist Kalidasa. This is one of the most important works of ancient Indian Sanskrit classical literature and the highest achievement of world ancient literature. The ballet derives a highly dramatic story from it, filled with complex themes such as love, jealousy, betrayal, revenge, and redemption. Religious taboos, class gaps, the subtlety of human nature, and the unpredictability of fate are all integrated into it. For the dance troupe and dancers, it is an even more challenging test to present magnificent scenes, control the dramatic rhythm, and shape complex characters.

II. Plot Introduction

The work tells a tortuous and strange love story: Nikiya, a bayadère dedicated to the temple, and Solor, a young warrior, fall in love and make a vow. However, Solor also accepts the king’s proposal to betroth his daughter, Princess Gamzatti, to him. The high priest, who covets Nikiya’s beauty, reveals Solor and Nikiya’s affair to the king. After learning this news, Princess Gamzatti devises a plan to kill Nikiya. Solor’s heart undergoes intense torture and suffering. Finally, in the destructive wrath of the gods, he follows Nikiya’s ghost and realizes his dream in heaven…

III. Artistic Features

A Foundational Work in the Development of World Ballet Art

“Many ballets have been passed down from generation to generation like legends and have long acquired the ancient luster of religious rituals. But “La Bayadère” itself is a poem that praises dance, memory, and time. Each dance adds new content to the previous one, just like the accumulation when learning a language.”

The ballet “La Bayadère” is considered in art history to be the pioneering work that initiated the symphonic choreography method of ballet. Many of the familiar ballet classic works are derived and evolved from it. It can be regarded as one of the foundational works of world ballet. Whether it is solos, duets, group dances, or even pantomime performances in the play, they all combine the subtlety in details and the high harmony at the macro level. The complex dance vocabulary is constructed on the stage with an extremely rigorous structure, representing a groundbreaking breakthrough in the development of dance art.

The Starting Point of the Symphonization of Ballet Music

The music of “La Bayadère” was composed by the Austrian composer Ludwig Minkus. He is a very famous ballet composer, and the music of the ballet “Don Quixote” was also created by him.

Its musical style is colorful, lively, and it is highly proficient in cross-cultural integration of music elements from different regions, making the creations more exotic and romantic. In The Dancer, he incorporated beautiful and mysterious Middle Eastern and Indian musical materials into the classical ballet score, making the music rich in color and full of vitality. Coupled with its elaborate structure and ever-changing melodies, it provides fertile ground for the rich expressiveness of the dance and, together with the choreography, drives the development of the plot.

Moreover, the symphonization of ballet music also started from The Dancer. With the symphony orchestra gradually becoming the standard for ballet accompaniment, ballet music has occupied an increasingly important position in classical music, which also reflects from another aspect the profound influence of this work on ballet art.

Reinterpreting the Classic with the Whole Company’s Efforts

The Central Ballet of China restaged this ballet after a four-year hiatus. The entire company attached great importance to it. With the artistic pursuit of perfection, they strived to bring out the classical beauty of the ballet to the fullest. During this round of rehearsals, we were honored to invite Julio Bocca, a world ballet superstar who was highly trusted and recommended by “Grandma Ma”, the former director of the National Ballet of Uruguay and the Ballet of Argentina, and a former star dancer of the American Ballet Theatre, to Beijing to guide the actors in rehearsals.

Master Julio Bocca, who came from afar, has also immersed himself in the rehearsal work of this ballet. Together with the excellent rehearsal teaching team of the Central Ballet of China, he is ensuring the smooth restaging of this ballet.

Secondly, it makes great efforts to achieve the goal of emphasizing “entering campuses”, “entering communities” and “reaching out to children” to present higher-level performances and better art popularization in China.

The troupe is now advancing with high spirits, adhering to the spirit of “solidarity, pragmatism, self-improvement and hard work”. Along the footsteps of the dedicated predecessors, it is striving towards the century-old dream in its heart. The current president and artistic director is Feng Ying.
