The Century-old Gulangyu Museum focuses on the cultural and historical theme of Gulangyu. Located at the former site of the Overseas Chinese Bank Villa a hundred years ago, it displays the items used by foreigners from fifteen countries on the island. Through these physical objects, it presents the changes of time and truly restores the living environment of Gulangyu a hundred years ago. Shuttling through the eighteen exhibition halls in the former Overseas Chinese Bank Villa, you can feel the passage of time.
In 1902, Gulangyu was divided up by the powers. Thirteen countries (some say fifteen countries) including the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Japan, Spain, the Netherlands, Austria, Norway, Sweden, and the Philippines successively established consulates on the island, formed a “consular corps”, and set up a “Municipal Council” and a “Mixed Court”. This is a painful memory that cannot be erased from Gulangyu. On the other hand, that special era also contributed to the prosperity and many legends of Gulangyu. The fascinating Gulangyu culture today gradually took shape during that time. However, whether it was famous or glorious, it has now disappeared with the passage of time. Most of us can only imagine the vicissitudes of that year through written descriptions.
