The East Six Palaces are located on the east side of the three major palaces in the inner court. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, they were mainly places where imperial concubines lived. This is a group of buildings consisting of six courtyards of the same form. The six palaces are: Jingren Palace, Chengqian Palace, Zhongcui Palace, Jingyang Palace, Yonghe Palace, and Yanxi Palace.
Who are the familiar figures that have lived in the East Six Palaces? The Noble Consort Xi of Emperor Yongzheng, that is, the prototype of Zhen Huan in the TV series ‘The Legend of Zhen Huan’, once lived in Jingren Palace. Zhen Fei, beloved by Emperor Guangxu, also lived in Jingren Palace. Dong Efei of Emperor Shunzhi lived in Chengqian Palace. Empress Dowager Ci’an, who jointly listened to the government behind a curtain with Cixi, had always lived in Zhongcui Palace in the East Six Palaces and was therefore called the Eastern Empress Dowager.
