Ho Tung’s residence, a mansion in Shanghai for the renowned comprador and entrepreneur Ho Tung, is located at No. 457, Seymour Road (now Shaanxi North Road in Jing’an District) in the western part of Shanghai. During World War I, Ho Tung began to invest heavily in Shanghai and sent his son, Ho Shih-chien, to reside in the city to manage his business affairs. Ho Tung’s real estate in Shanghai was primarily concentrated along Broadway Road (now Daming Road) in Hongkou, along with Wenjianshi Road (now Tanggu Road), and Miller Road (now Emei Road). Later, he also acquired properties near the intersection of Seymour Road (now Shaanxi North Road) and Avening Road (now Beijing West Road) in the western residential area, including Taiping Garden at 470 Seymour Road, and constructed his own residence at 457, opposite. The land plot, covering an area of 17 acres, was purchased in 1926 and the construction was completed in 1928. Surrounded by a Chinese-style garden with small bridges, flowing water, winding paths, and rocky mountains, stands a pseudo-three-story building with an area of nearly 1000 square meters, designed in the style of English Renaissance architecture. Ho Tung’s Shanghai residence has been listed as an excellent historical building in Shanghai. The surrounding area is also rich in excellent historical buildings, such as the former Jewish Synagogue at No. 500, the former Baptist Huain Temple at No. 375, and the former Song Yaoru residence at No. 369.
