The Marble Boat, also known as the Qingyan Boat, is located in the northwest of Kunming Lake and on the shore at the western foot of Longevity Hill. It was built in 1775 (the 20th year of Emperor Qianlong’s reign in the Qing Dynasty). Building a marble boat in the garden is not only to prove that the water in the garden is flowing and can be toured by boat, but also to highlight the realm of ‘no one at the ferry’ in the state of ‘the boat lies athwart’. The hull of the Marble Boat in the Summer Palace is carved from huge stones and is 36 meters long. The two-story white wooden building on the boat is decorated with paint to look like marble patterns. The top is decorated with brick carvings, which is exquisite and gorgeous.
