The Memorial Archway for Martyrs of the Eastern Expedition

The Martyrs’ Cemetery of the Eastern Expedition is located at Wansong Ridge, Changzhou Island, Huangpu, in the eastern suburbs of Guangzhou City. The cemetery, built against the mountain, features a stone-paved tomb path, pavilions, and tombs behind the Memorial Archway, aligning with the Merit Archway to form a central axis. It is situated high in the south and low in the north, facing the Pearl River, and exudes a majestic presence.
The Martyrs’ Cemetery of the Eastern Expedition commemorates the 516 martyrs, including teachers and students of the Whampoa Military Academy, who heroically sacrificed their lives during the two Eastern Expeditions in 1925. Covering an area of approximately 50,000 square meters, the cemetery consists of a central axis that includes the Memorial Archway, tomb path, pavilions, tombs, and the Merit Archway. Facing the Pearl River to the north and backed by Wansong Ridge, the cemetery is constructed on the mountain with a grand momentum and is known as the ‘Little Huanghuagang.’
