The Three Gorges Staircase City scenic area is located within the new urban area of Yunyang, encompassing four major attractions: Dengyun Ladder, Three Gorges Cultural Relics Park, Panshi City, and Longjiling Park, which are rich in both cultural and natural landscapes.
The Three Gorges Cultural Relics Park is situated at the foot of the ancient military stockade of Panshi City, covering an area of approximately 16,000 square meters and featuring 11 ancient buildings. These structures, originally located below the 175-meter waterline of the Three Gorges Reservoir, were identified as relocation protection projects under the national planning, adhering to the principle of constructing them in their original form. Relocation began at the end of 2000 and officially opened on September 29, 2009, after nearly nine years of construction. Here, visitors can appreciate the ancient architectural styles from different eras, types, and characteristics, making it a tangible testament to the profound historical culture of Yunyang.
Panshi City, also known as Dashicheng or Modan Stockade, stands towering by the river, stretching across the skyline, and resembling a giant millstone, hence its name. Historical records such as the ‘Huayang Guo Zhi’ document its existence, and ancient poets described it as: ‘From side to side, a ridge; from end to end, a peak. A towering peak rising from the ground, ten thousand feet tall and strong. The terrain of Western Shu is perilous, with green mountains carved into jade lotus blooms.’
