Tian Jie, as the name suggests, is the marketplace in the heavens. Located atop Mount Tai, it stretches from the South Heavenly Gate in the west to the Bixia Temple in the east, spanning a length of 0.6 kilometers. Not only is it a place of breathtaking scenery, but it is also bustling with trade, lined with shops and businesses, creating a unique custom that makes it one of China’s ‘Top Ten Specialty Markets’.

Upon entering the South Heavenly Gate and ascending two more steps, you arrive at Tian Jie, a marketplace that has been hanging in the sky since ancient times. Both ancient pilgrims and modern tourists have a deep impression of this street. Tian Jie is filled with hotels, restaurants, and shops. Records indicate that Tian Jie has been prosperous since the Qing Dynasty, with some shop owners using physical objects as signs, such as the ‘Sieve House’, ‘Gourd House’, and ‘Double Bucket House’. These shops ranged from large establishments with five or six rooms to small ones with just one or two, selling incense and paper money during the day and providing lodging for pilgrims at night.

To the east of Tian Jie’s stone arch, on the north side of the road, is the site of Emperor Qianlong’s palace and where the Tang Dynasty literary scholar Su Yuanming studied. The north side of the street features reconstructed ancient-style buildings, while the south side has a long stone railing that allows visitors to gaze far into the night at the splendid views of Zhongtian and the city lights of Tai’an. Entering Tian Jie, whether for shopping or sightseeing, is a very pleasant experience.

For specific opening times, please consult the scenic area’s must-see tips: 1. Prices here are relatively high, so it is recommended to bring your own food. 2. Nearby attractions such as ‘Elephant Trunk Peak’, ‘White Cloud Cave’, ‘Qingyun Cave’, ‘Confucius Cliff’, ‘Confucius Temple’, ‘Beidou Platform’, and ‘Si Bei Rock’ are available for exploration. 3. Even in summer, the temperature on the mountain is quite low, so it is advised to bring a coat; cotton coats can also be rented on the mountain.
