The Big Buddha at Tian Tan

The world-renowned Tian Tan Buddha is located on the peak of Woodfish Peak in Ang Ping, Lantau Island, facing the Po Lin Monastery. This bronze seated Buddha statue stands at 34 meters tall and is made from 250 tons of bronze and 4 pounds of gold. The Buddha’s face is plump and dignified, with ears reaching the shoulders, and the right hand displaying the ‘Gesture of Fearlessness’, symbolizing the Buddha’s desire to save all beings.

The name ‘Tian Tan Buddha’ is derived from the statue’s base, which is modeled after the base of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests in Beijing. Inside the base, there are three exhibition halls connected by a circular staircase, with a ‘Yoga Bell’ hanging in the middle, measuring 2 meters in diameter, engraved with Buddha images and scriptures. The bell is struck 108 times daily, signifying the removal of ‘108 kinds of afflictions’.

Please note that to pay homage to the Buddha, you must climb 268 stone steps to reach the statue. The Buddha’s solemn and peaceful presence, combined with the picturesque surroundings, provides a tranquil environment for contemplation and relaxation. Inside the memorial hall of the Buddha’s base, the Buddha’s relics are enshrined, and you can visit upon purchasing a ticket. The opening hours are from 10:00 to 17:30 all year round, with specific business status subject to the day’s opening conditions.
