Tianchi Temple is located at the foot of Tianchi Mountain on the summit of Moganshan, beneath the Tianchi. It was constructed during the Yuan Zhizun period (1330-1333) and founded by Zen Master Wengxin. The temple gradually fell into disrepair during the Zhizheng era but was restored and expanded by Zen Master Yuzhi during the Ming Jiajing period. Yuzhi, also known as Yuequan, was well-versed in scriptures from a young age and later became a monk, studying under Yangming at Mount Ji, and later with Zen Master Mengju at Jinling Bifeng Temple. After returning to Tianchi Temple, he often engaged in discussions on ‘the study of innate knowledge’ and advocated for the unity of Confucianism and Buddhism. Yuzhi was not only knowledgeable in scriptures but also skilled in poetry and prose. To enhance the temple’s garden scenery, twelve scenic spots were arranged around Tianchi Temple, including the Waterfall Spring, Bamboo Path, Moon Viewing Terrace, Half Cloud Pavilion, Stone House Rock, Silent Illumination Pond, Inch Wall Peak, Immortal Cave, Immortal Saw Plate, Reclining Immortal Stone, Lion Lying Ridge, and Sword Washing Pond. The opening hours and business status are subject to the daily operation.
