Tianfeng Tower was built during the years of “Ten Thousand Years of Heavenly Inscription” to “Ten Thousand Years of Ascending to the Throne” of Empress Wu Zetian in the Tang Dynasty. Thus, it was named after taking the first and last characters of the era name. The entire ancient tower building has seven bright and seven dark floors, totaling 14 floors, and is as high as fifty or sixty meters. It is said that at that time, people first piled up layers of sediment and then transported bricks and stones up.
They built one floor and piled it up one layer at a time until reaching the top of the tower. After completion, the sediment was removed. Due to the large amount of sediment left, the two streets near the tower are still called “Dashani Street” and “Xiaoshani Street” today. There is a legend about Tianfeng Tower circulating in Ningbo. It tells of an old stonemason who repelled a turtle spirit that flooded Ningbo City with precious stones. So, the common people built this tower in the city center to preserve the precious stones and let it always protect Ningbo City. However, the real reason for building this tower is actually related to Ningbo’s Maritime Silk Road. At that time, this tower was an important water transportation navigation mark for the ancient Mingzhou Port. Today, thousands of years later, Tianfeng Tower no longer undertakes shipping functions. Instead, it has become an ancient landmark in the city center. You can stroll in the park under the tower and look up at its tall tower body. Buying a ticket to climb the tower and overlooking the Chenghuang Temple not far away and the cityscape of Ningbo is also a good experience. It is open from 08:30 to 16:00 all year round. The specific business status is subject to the opening situation on that day.Tianfeng Tower
